Yes. Inverter systems run a short defrost cycle when ice builds up on the outdoor unit, then go back to heating. You may notice a brief pause in warm air while it happens, which is normal.
Keep a clear space around the unit, trim overhanging branches where you can, and have the coil cleaned at each service. When we install new units, we place them away from trees where possible.
Keeping windows and doors shut and running the system can help keep smoke out, but an air conditioner is not an air purifier. Follow NSW Health advice during smoke events and have the filters cleaned once the smoke clears.
For a family house where most rooms need heating and cooling, zoned ducted is usually better value over time. For one or two rooms, or a home without roof space, split systems cost less upfront.
