Air Conditioning Como For Homes on the Hills Above the River

Como grew up on the slopes above the Georges River, with the Woronora River to the west. Lots of homes sit on sloping blocks with stairs, decks and not much flat ground, so where the outdoor unit goes is the first question we answer.

Main challenge
Finding a safe, serviceable spot for the outdoor unit

Air conditioning in Como is shaped by the slope of the land. Many homes sit on hillside blocks above the Georges River, so the outdoor unit position, pipe route and service access need planning before anything else. River humidity also keeps systems busy through summer. Alpha & Omega has installed air conditioning across the Sutherland Shire since 1989.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

Outdoor Unit Options for Sloping Como Blocks

There is nearly always a good spot. It just depends on what your block gives us.

Under the house

In the space under a raised floor or deck

Common on Como homes built into the slope.

Works well when: There is enough height and airflow, and a technician can reach it safely for servicing.
On wall brackets

Mounted on a side or rear wall

Keeps the unit off sloping ground and away from leaf build-up.

Works well when: The wall is solid, the brackets are rated for the unit, and it can still be reached for maintenance.
On a level pad

A small concrete or composite pad

Gives a stable base where the ground drops away.

Works well when: There is a flat-enough spot near the house with good drainage.
Up top

Near the street or the top of the block

Sometimes the easiest access is from the driveway side.

Works well when: Pipe runs to the rooms are reasonable, and the unit will not disturb neighbours. Multi-split →

Long pipe runs and pumped drains are normal here

On a sloping block, the outdoor unit can end up a fair way from the rooms it serves, and water from the indoor unit cannot always run downhill on its own.

We size pipe runs properly and fit condensate pumps where they are needed, so nothing leaks or struggles.

Warning signs

Is Your Como Air Conditioner Due for a Repair?

Humid summers by the river mean long run times, and that is when faults show themselves.

Book a technician if:

  • It blows air but the room stays muggy and warm
  • There is a new rattle, grind or loud hum outside
  • You smell mould, damp or burning when it starts
  • Water is overflowing from the indoor unit or the drain pump
  • The safety switch trips when it comes on
  • You can hear the condensate pump running non-stop

Daikin Systems for Como Homes

Daikin's inverter systems are a good match for Como's humid river summers. They hold the temperature steady and have a proper dry mode for sticky days.

  • Five years of Daikin parts and labour cover on our installs
  • Dry mode for humid days by the river
  • Blue Fin protection on each outdoor coil
  • Quiet running for close-set hillside neighbours
Como FAQs

Air Conditioning Questions From Como

Where should the outdoor unit go on a sloping block?

Under a raised floor or deck, on wall brackets, or on a level pad are the usual options. The right spot has good airflow, drains well and can be reached safely for servicing.

What is a condensate pump and do I need one?

Indoor units produce water that normally drains by gravity. If the drain has to run uphill or a long way, a small pump moves the water out. On sloping Como blocks they are quite common.

Can you install ducted air conditioning in a split-level home?

Yes. We usually zone it by level so you can run upstairs and downstairs separately, and plan duct runs around the changes in floor height.

Does river humidity affect my air conditioner?

It keeps systems running longer in summer and means more moisture passes through the indoor unit. Using dry mode on muggy days and keeping drains clean helps a lot.

How often should I service my system?

Once a year for most Como homes. If your unit is close to the water or under heavy trees, every six months is better.

Do you hold the right licences?

Yes, with ARC refrigerant licence AU54289 and NSW contractor licence 329810C.
