The city is made out of over 650 suburbs, providing numerous attractions to all kinds of travelers.
One of these suburbs is Sutherland Shire, known by the locals as “the Shire”, which is known by many to be the birthplace of modern Australia, as here was the landing site of James Cook back in 1770. If you are planning to visit Sydney, or more precisely the Shire, below are some activities to keep you entertained throughout your trip.
Bathe in the sun on Sutherland Shire’s Cronulla Beach
Cronulla beach has been a popular vacation place for people all over Australia and not only, even since the first fleets arrived here. Whether you choose to lay on the beach all day, bathe onto the ocean, or check out some of the rock pools, Cronulla beach provides everything you need. A popular place for surfing, swimming or trying all kinds of water sports, the beaches of Cronulla are always roaming with both locals and tourists.
The area is also sprinkled with parks, including the Cronulla Park, Dunningham Park, Monro Pak, which features the Cronulla War Memorial and the Don Lucas Reserve.
Take a trip to the Kamay Botany Bay National Park
If you don’t want to spend the day at the beach, but still want to gaze at the ocean, why not go for a walk through the Kamay Botany Bay National Park. You are lucky, during June and July you can spot whales swimming close to the coast. They sometimes come as close as 200m to the shore.
The best area to spot whales is Cape Solander, located in the Kurnell area of the park. You will find multiple viewing platforms, together with plenty of information about whales.
Take a walk through the Waterhouse National Camellia Gardens
This garden began as a project in 1970, run by professor Waterhouse, a well-known authority on camellias. Throughout the years, the location extended, now featuring over 600 camellias, some of which are Professor Waterhouse’s rare varieties.
The gardens are perfect for picnics, sports activities and, of course, walking around gazing at the beautiful flowers. They attract both locals and tourists alike, and you may even be able to spot a wedding here and there. If you want to take a break after a long walk, The Teahouse, a small café place, is located just near the top gates.
Visit the Sydney Tramway Museum in the Sutherland Shire
The museum was opened more than 50 years ago and features a detailed history if the Sydney Trams, also including a unique selection of trams all over the world, including San Francisco, Munich, Berlin, and Milan. The location is run entirely by volunteers, which makes the museum even more impressive.
You can even jump on a fully functional tram and ride the 4 kilometers track that goes towards the Royal National Park. Tickets are pretty affordable ($18 for adults) and include admission into the display hall and unlimited rides.
Get a taste of art at the Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery & Arts Centre
The Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery & Arts Centre is an impressive art complex that offers a number of exhibitions, workshops and art courses, together with special art events and artist talks. You can gaze at the marvelous exhibitions, drink some coffee, or let the kids attend art workshops.
The location even hosts a film club three days a week, aiming to bring together film enthusiasts from all over the Shire. Award-winning movies from Sundance and Cannes festival have been screened here multiple times.
Visit the Sutherland Historical Society & Museum
Close to the Sutherland railway station is the Historical Society and Museum, which aims to preserve and share the history of the Sutherland Shire with the world. There is plenty you can visit here, including collections of artifacts, interactive displays and even a walking tour of the most important places in Sutherland Shire.
